University-Industry cooperation

A team of scientists from the Department of Semiconductor and Optoelectronic Devices at the Lodz University of Technology, in cooperation with Pietrucha International Sp. z o.o., an international leader in the production of plastic products, has developed an innovative fiber optic system for monitoring stress on structures made of vinyl sheet piles. These types of elements are an alternative to traditional materials such as steel or concrete and are widely used in the civil engineering sector.

Safety improvement

The innovative sensor solution aims to increase safety, especially in the context of flood protection and engineering structures. The deformation monitoring system is based on the integration of fiber optic sensors with sheet piles that form the structure of retaining or anti-filtration walls. The advantage of using fiber optic technology is the ability to conduct precise readings, with detection of stress distribution over the entire area of the monitored element.

Early detection of anomalies

The developed sensor solution allows for early detection of anomalies. The system informs about the emergence of potential threats, such as excessive stress or the risk of deformation of the structure. Data from the sensors can also influence the optimization of maintenance and repair work, which translates into reduced operating costs. However, the biggest advantage is that detected overloads of the structure in time will help avoid disasters related to wall damage, which can lead to flooding or infrastructure damage.

Tests & commercialization

The first tests in real conditions confirmed the effectiveness of the solution, which met the great interest from the industrial partner. In mid-2024, an agreement was signed to grant an exclusive license to use the developed know-how for Pietrucha International. Currently, as part of the research of the fiber optic technology team, work is continuing on further improvement of the solution and ensuring its international commercial success.
