Fiber-optic technologies for public safety and protection!

Representatives of research teams from the Defense and Security Research Center at the Lodz University of Technology had the opportunity to present the technologies they develop daily during the AZYL EXPO 2026 event.

Scientists from the Fiber-Optic Technology Team Mateusz Łakomski oraz Bartłomiej Guzowski,  presented the research area of fiber-optic sensors – solutions that, thanks to their unique properties, can find wide application in monitoring and security support systems.

Fiber-optic sensors enable parallel measurements at multiple points simultaneously or across large sections of infrastructure. In the case of distributed sensors, they also enable obtaining information about changes occurring along the entire fiber-optic path, extending up to tens of kilometers! Their resistance to electromagnetic interference, small size, and the ability to integrate with complex measurement systems make them an interesting solution for demanding applications.

Fiber optic technologies perfectly fit the dual-use concept, meaning solutions applicable in both the civilian and defense sectors. They can support, among other things:

  • temperature monitoring and early detection of fire threats,
  • monitoring the technical condition of critical infrastructure and facilities,
  • detection of alarming changes and support for early warning systems,
  • continuous data collection from point and distributed sensors, supporting decision-making and faster response to threats.

The ability to use the same technology in various areas means that fiber optic sensors can support both daily infrastructure monitoring and citizen safety, as well as crisis management and defense-related tasks. The development and practical application of fiber optic technologies can be a crucial element of modern monitoring, warning, and security systems, supporting the operations of services and institutions responsible for civil protection.
